Mission
Hesed House of Wharton is housed on property owned by the City of Wharton and utilized through a public/private partnership. The property was acquired due to the impending construction of phase one of the Wharton Colorado River Levee Project. Hesed House leases the former private residences to provide free and donation-based community programming. We utilize a community care model rooted in asset-based community development to provide resources and activities not only for, but also with our own residents so that our community is able to thrive, rather than just survive.
Hesed House aims to improve the environmental and social conditions that contribute to poor health and support a quality of life that promotes the health and well-being of Wharton County residents, with special attention to those who are underserved.
Hesed House of Wharton originated as a year long program called It Is Well: A Year of Arts and Movement, funded by the Rebuild Texas Fund ($50,000) and Texas Methodist Foundation ($10,000) while the current ED was employed as the Director of Youth Ministries at Wharton FUMC in 2018. While serving as Director of Student Ministries, Stephanie Konvicka, Executive Director of Hesed House of Wharton, led response for multiple community disasters, most significantly Hurricane Harvey. She is one of the founders (2016) and current president of the Wharton County Recovery Team. Hesed House of Wharton was founded to provide long-term support for community members affected by disaster, in a community that suffers high social and ecological vulnerability. Since establishment, Hesed House has supported Wharton area residents through Harvey, COVID, and Winter Storm Uri response and recovery.
Because Wharton has suffered repeated disasters, the community lacks resilience making community members more vulnerable to personal and communal disasters. Hesed House provides free and donation-based services to increase personal resilience of community members. Utilizing a community care model, Hesed House provides services and activities to support whole-person wellness. Programming includes physical fitness classes, mindfulness, yoga, support groups, nature education, workforce education and work-based learning, counseling, community support intake and resourcing, and community events. Hesed House is currently in the process of opening a new Connected Learning Center to provide technology education and access for all community members, and which can be utilized as volunteer disaster operations center during a disaster.
