Spontaneous volunteers—individuals who step forward to help immediately after a disaster—play a vital role in short-term recovery by bringing extra hands, energy, and compassion to Texas Gulf Coast communities in need. While their willingness to serve is invaluable, effective disaster response depends on ensuring that this help is safe, coordinated, and directed where it can do the most good. The Members and Partners of the TGCROAD, TXVOAD, and NVOAD are committed to welcoming and encouraging these volunteers, while also guiding them to serve under the supervision of trusted VOAD member organizations and local jurisdictions. This approach protects both survivors and volunteers, while maximizing the impact of every act of service.
In TGCRVOAD, two members—Just Serve and Volunteer Houston—operate virtual volunteer centers and are committed to supporting dedicated disaster volunteer centers. We encourage VOAD members and jurisdictions to register with one or both services based on their needs and to use blue-sky days to prepare for accepting spontaneous volunteers referred through these platforms. Both organizations serve all thirteen TGCRVOAD counties, with Volunteer Houston preferred by Harris County.
